One of the reasons why i dont rely entirely on pdf's is the sheer fact that there are lots of misprints. I think the ultimate solution and what I do is to maintain a Safari Books Online membership, in addition to the use of an e-reader.
With the Books Online, you can print sections for "traditional" reading and highlighting, but you also have the option to download full PDFs and place them on your ebook reader. Safari Books Online does limit how much online PDF downloading you can do as part of your subscription - so for certain critical texts - I end up purchasing those for the ebook in their entirety.
